Promoting primary education

Since education is one of the basic human rights there is no scope to take it lightly

Speakers at a discussion meeting in Rajshahi on Saturday observed that the present government is committed to ensuring qualitative and quantitative primary education for freeing the nation from the curse of illiteracy. In fact, primary education in the country, particularly in remote rural areas, is confronted with a host of problems. The learners are bearing the brunt of the situation. Acute shortage of teachers, teaching appliances, absence of safe drinking water, toilet facilities and other infrastructural problems are jeopardising education at many primary schools in the country. Abysmal poverty gripping many parents and guardians is also a stumbling block in ensuring proper education in rural areas.
Incidents of a lone teacher running a government primary school against the posts of four teachers in remote areas of the country make newspaper headlines at times.   Isn’t it a mockery of imparting education? The future of the students studying at the school can easily be imagined. It is the responsibility of the education department to expedite filling up of the vacant posts of teachers. Besides, scores of other schools in different places of the country are facing manifold problems. There are also teachers who dodge their responsibility hindering education of students. The truant teachers must be made accountable.  There are illiterate and poverty-stricken parents in rural areas who find it more lucrative to engage their children in income-generating activities rather than sending them to school.  These people should be motivated to desist from this   practice. There should be proactive measures for early   solution of the problems in the interest of ensuring proper education in the country.
Since education is one of the basic human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, there is no scope to take it lightly.  It is heartening that the government has taken various measures for promoting education in the country, including female education. But yet  the rate of dropouts from primary schools is a matter of concern. Experts should identify the causes of high dropout rates and take measures accordingly. Quality education is a far cry for the children belonging to underprivileged classes.  The authorities concerned should address this issue with top priority.
For achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) proper emphasis should be laid to the education sector, including the primary education. Equal facility of education should be ensured to people from urban areas as   well as from rural areas.  Concerted and collective efforts by the relevant authority, teachers, students, parents and guardians can help achieve the desired goal.
