It’s very sad to know that on a single day (Monday) 35 migrants who had been fleeing the scenes of war in Syria died in the Aegean Sea in two separate drowning accidents off the coast of Turkey. The actual figure of how many refugees died in sea so far is difficult to come by, but according to the International Organisation for Migration, in January alone more than 360 people lost their lives when they tried to cross the sea. By all standards, the tragedy that is befalling on the Syrian people—both who are braving odds to stay in their native lands or fleeing the war—is monumental.
Several months ago when European countries refused to accept the influx of refugees, these hapless people faced very hard predicament. Even those who were lucky to enter European countries are now facing different kinds of problems. They are often segregated. Many unkind remarks were made on them, and some even talked of only allowing the Christian refugees.
Yet these migrant people are not responsible for what they are facing now. In any case, the plights of the refuges have to be taken very humanely by the countries involved. More desperate people will flee the scenes of war for safe destinations and the coast guards of relevant countries must come to their aid so that their lives do not perish in water.
As wars create refugees, to stop sufferings and displacement of people, you have to stop war. Yet those who made call of war in the history never thought of the monumental tragedy that their actions would bring upon common people. The war that is raging in Syria or Middle East for that matter is very much complex. This is surely not the third world war, yet the whole world is now involved in the complex gamble of the Middle East. And no one is expecting that within a short time a peaceful solution will come from the place. And it would still be very catastrophic if the war in Syria turns into a global war.
There are people who always do nasty politics out of the lives of unfortunate refugees. In the case of Syrian refugees also, such mindless things are going on, whether it is in Turkey, USA or Germany. While giving safe shelter to the refugees and treating them in a dignified way is a humane responsibility, it is also very important to stop the people who play with their lives.
