The government has launched an initiative to equip students of educational institutions, such as schools and madrasas, with speaking and listening skills in English. It will take the assistance of the British Council that will provide the necessary logistical support for evaluation of students in this connection. The education ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard with the British Council yesterday. Additional secretary of the education ministry, Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed, and British Council director Barbara Wickham signed the MoU at the meeting room of the education ministry in the presence of education minister Nurul Islam Nahid.
“English speaking and listening skills of students would be reviewed from now onwards, along with their reading and writing skills. Hence, speaking English and listening to English language would be regularly practised in schools,” the minister said.
The minister expressed hope that students would benefit and become efficient in English by acquiring the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. “Our students have so far been evaluated with regard to English reading and writing skills. But now, they will be evaluated with respect to their speaking and listening skills as well. Therefore, students would also practise speaking and listening skills in the classroom,” he said.
“We want to equip our students with all four skills related to the English language so that they can compete with the whole world. This initiative would enhance the quality of learning English for students. Later on, the entire education system will improve,” he added. The minister thanked the UK government for extending cooperation to Bangladesh in this regard. “The people of Bangladesh will be enriched by learning the English language,” said Barbara Wickham.
