Mabia Akhtar Simanta earned the distinction of winning the first gold medal for Bangladesh in the 12th South Asian Games now being held in Guwahati and Shillong, India. Mabia obtained the gold medal yesterday in the 63 kg women’s weightlifting with a total lifting of 149 kg which included 82 kg in jerk, the highest by any lifter. Ayesha Dharmasena of Sri Lanka and Jun Maya of Nepal bagged the silver and bronze medal respectively. Later Mahfuza Akhtar Shila of Bangladesh brought the second gold for Bangladesh when she edged past other in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke.
Earlier in the day, Fulpat Chakma bagged a silver in the women’s 58 Kg weight category with lifting 144 kg. In fact Fulpat won the second silver the country after another female competitor won the first silver on Saturday. She did the feat in women’s wrestling Bangladesh women’s team retained bronze medal in the table tennis team event when they earned a hard fought 3-2 sets win over Nepal. Rahima opened the account for Bangladesh beating Alina of Nepal 3-0 in the first set. Rumi doubles the lead with a 3-2 games win against Nabita of Nepal. Nepal then fought back and drew level 2-2 in the match. Finally Rumi completed the victory outplaying Alina by 3-1 games. Meanwhile, Bangladesh men’s badminton team defeated Maldives by 3-0 sets in a group match yesterday.
And in the tennis event Bangladesh had a mixed success. Amol Roy and Ranjan Ram of Bangladesh beat Gafoori Feroz Ahmed &and Gafoori Farid Ahmed of Afghanistan 6-0, 6-1 in a first round men’s doubles event. Ramanathan Ramkumar and Vijay Sunder Prasanth of India beat Dipu Lal and Md. Anwar Hossain of Bangladesh 6-0, 6-2.
Ranjan Ram and Afrana Islam Prity of Bangladesh defeated Bhandary Kamal and Sharma Ganga of Nepal 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in a mixed doubles match. And in another match Amol Roy and Eshita Afroz of Bangladesh went down to Roygodamanaa Harshana and Muttiah Amritha of Sri Lanka 6-0, 6-1 Bangladesh female players made their exit from the women’s singles event. Shafina of Bangladesh tasted a crushing 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Mansoor Sara of Pakistan, while Afrana Islam Prity went to down to Waduge Nethmie of Sri Lanka by 6-2, 6-2.
