Five warehouses gutted
Five jhut (garment rags) and cotton warehouses were gutted by a fire that broke out at Mill Gate Namabazar in Tongi early Saturday. Hasibur Rahman, station manager of Joydebpur fire service, said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a warehouse in the area around 2am and soon engulfed the adjoining four warehouses. On information, seven firefighting units rushed in and extinguished the blaze.
93 held in special drives
Chittagong district police in a series of overnight drives arrested 93 persons, including two Islami Chhatra Shibir activists with yaba and liquor from different upazilas of the district on Friday night. Abdul Awal, additional superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district, said police detained 93 persons including two ICS activists with 1,030 pieces of yaba tablets and 41 litres of country made liquor.
Minor commits suicide
A minor orphan allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with the ceiling of his room at Barisal Government Shishu Sadan in the city on Saturday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mashiur Rahman Yusuf, 12. OC of Kotwali Police Station Shakhawat Hossain said some students of the orphanage spotted Mashiur hanging from the ceiling of his room around 5:45pm.
Later, they rescued and sent the boy to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead.
