The Barisal Education Board (BEB) has served notice to 93 schools, asking them to return extra money collected from students by February 9. The schools had collected extra money from students at the time of filling up SSC exam forms mid-November last year. The exam started on February 1.
BEB Chairman Prof Ziaul Haque, said that with the help of Intelligence department, the Board had prepared a list of schools that collected extra money from students, violating BEB orders.
The Board collected proper documents before disclosing the names of 93 schools on their website and directed the authorities of these schools to return extra amounts collected. Prof Ziaul said that if school authorities fail to return the extra money, they will be punished under
law.
Of the 93 schools issued warning, three are in Barisal district, 42 in Pirojpur, 32 in Borguna and 16 in Jhalakathi district. A majority of these schools are located in villages and most of the students are poor.
That school authorities have charged exorbitant exam fees from students has evoked a sharp reaction from their guardians, more so, with some of them having mortgaged their property or borrowed money from loan sharks to fulfill payment. BEB sources said there are over 7 lakh students in 1,683 high schools under BEB. SSC exam fees, as fixed by BEB, are a maximum of Tk. 1,150 per student of Humanities and Commerce, whereas per Science student, it is a maximum of Tk. 1,240, with Tk. 65 per paper for written and theoretical subjects, Tk. 30 per paper for practical exams, Tk. 50 for academic transcript, Tk. 100 for certificate, Tk. 15 for scouts, Tk. 15 for girl guides, Tk. 15 for observing education week funds, Tk. 100 for GPA improvement, Tk. 100 for irregular examination, Tk. 100 for late fees, Tk. 250 for Centre fees and other for Board fees.
Field-level investigation has revealed that both public and private schools have charged fees ranging from Tk. 2,150 to over Tk. 3,000 from each candidate, violating BEB instructions. Extra fees have been collected in the name of tuition fees, coaching, management, development, magazine, sports, Milad, mosques, salaries of fourth-class employees and so on.
Meanwhile, Inspector of Schools of BEB, Md. Bashar Talukdar, said they have not yet received any complaints from guardians or students about collection of excessive exam fees by school authorities.
