While addressing the 5th convocation of a private university in the capital last Saturday, President Abdul Hamid insisted on turning a university into an ideal academic ground for practicing knowledge and conducting research. President’s call for such an endeavor ought to be paid great attention.
In recent times, systems of higher education have become highly diversified and meet a variety of needs, especially making a skilled workforce. It’s right here where research-intensive universities can play the leading role in producing research and knowledge oriented quality graduates.
However, in order to generate such graduates the private universities should specifically focus on intensifying research-based teaching and learning methodologies coupled with practicing and sharing knowledge. On a different perspective, it’s the institute or university which should directly inspire and guide the student to thrive for excellence in a specific field of study. In the face of increased competition, our society today is not merely seeking graduates equipped with good GPA scores, but with aspirations to acquire in-depth knowledge so that they can contribute to a particular field with outstanding service and innovations.
In reality, our private universities are not only expensive but rather conventional, in terms of teaching and sharing knowledge. Professors and teachers are still selected based on their respective academic degrees, whereas in the west top researchers - irrespective of their age and degrees – have frequently become inspirational teachers. Courses at these research universities are often incorporated with latest research works.
Collaborative joint tasks with experts are being held with state-of-the-art facilities for research publication. Moreover, many of these universities tend to share three common aspects — they select their students, they are primarily dedicated to the search for knowledge and they are evidently marked by a spirit of critical inquiry. Profit making by charging higher fees comes much later.
Apart from the topic of research, the president also pushed the universities to operate according to the guidelines of Private University Act 2010 and give more attention to poor students. Both should be taken with equal importance. Private universities should not be places for just handing over certificates and counting profits. On the contrary, they have to guarantee the standard of higher education they provide.
We would like to see both public and private universities to initiate joint efforts with renowned universities abroad, aiming to boost collaborative research activities and share and transfer of knowledge.
