Closure of railway station protested

Hundreds of people laid a siege to Dhala Railway Station and put barricade on railway track in Trishal upazila yesterday morning, protesting the closure of one of the oldest train stations and demanding its immediate operation.
They also demanded a stoppage of some commuter trains at the station.
Movement of several local and express trains to and from Mymensingh has been disrupted, police said. People in their hundreds came from nearby villages, who use the railway station to travel to and from Dhaka and Mymensingh, agitated against the closure of the station, effective from February 1.
They also alleged that the railway authorities closed the station without prior notice, causing a serious problem to commuters.
The agitating people also put barricade on Dhaka-Mymensingh railway track, disrupting railway communication, said Abdul Ahad Khan, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh Railway Police.
However, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control to help resumption of communication, the OC added.
Later, the people submitted memorandums to the railway authorities, and district and police administrations. They also gave an ultimatum of seven days to meet their demands. They have also threatened to go for tougher movement if the authorities fail to restore the station by the deadline. Md Bellal Hossain, senior assistant police superintendent of Gafargoan circle, said the people started their peaceful agitation at around 6.00 am, which continued until 9.15am.
The people lifted their blockade programme after being assured of considering their demands by local administration, police said.
Admitting the closure of the station due to withdrawal of stationmaster, Joyanta Majumder, Mymensingh Railway Station superintendent said the higher authorities know better about the future of the station
