At least seven people, including four policemen, were injured as a group of villagers carried out an attack on the law enforcers centering the demarcation of areas for voter listing at Hatia upazila of Noakhali yesterday, reports UNB. The injured police members were identified as sub-inspector Harun, assistant sub-inspector Shahidur Rahman, constable Shohag and watchman Alamgir.
Inspector of Hatia Police Station Jakir Hossain said the Boyarchar union parishad was included in the jurisdiction of Hatia upazila of Noakhali district few days back. On the other hand, residents of Chargazi pnion parishad in Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur district claimed Boyarchar as a part of their district.
However, the Election Commission (EC) started updating the voter list of Boyarchar after the demarcation took place.
On Saturday morning, a group of miscreants along with some agitated villagers of Chargazi union parishad carried out an attack at a school at Boyarchar where updating of voter lists was going on.
On information, police rushed to the spot around 10:30am when the miscreants swooped on the law enforcers and engaged in a clash with them, leaving four policemen and three locals injured.
Police brought the situation under control by firing 18-20 rounds of bullets in the air.
Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
