MA Latif, a lawmaker of the ruling Awami League from Chittagong-11 constituency, yesterday said he has no involvement in the distortion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Chittagong on January 30.
The lawmaker was addressing a press briefing at Bangabandhu Conference Hall of the Chittagong World Trade Centre building.
A group of people, as a part of conspiracy to belittle him, intentionally did the heinous deed of superimposing the face of the father of the nation on his (Latif”s) body on billboards and thus distorted Bangabandhu’s image, he said.
“None having a sound mind man can do such a heinous deed. What is my benefit by superimposing the face of Bangabandhu on my body?” questioned Latif.
“Now it is my duty to find out who was involved in the fiasco to remove the stigma on me,” he added.
“I want to keep the Chittagong port operational, I want development of the port, so a vested quarter is conspiring against me,” Latif claimed while answering to journalists’ questions.
MA Latif installed several billboards and festoons at his constituency in January, carrying photos of Bangabandhu, marking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Chittagong.
It is alleged that the ruling party MP superimposed the face of the father of the nation on his own body.
As a result, the billboards and festoons displayed the photos of Bangabandhu, but the posture, attire, and shoes did not match those that marked the father of the nation out in his lifetime, read the allegations.
A Tk 1,000 crore defamation case was filed with a Chittagong court on Thursday against MA Latif over the incident. The lawmaker has also been facing severe criticisms over the incident.
