Twenty-five years is not a long period of time for a newspaper but in the realm of English language journalism in Bangladesh to complete twenty-five years of existence is quite a significant achievement. The Daily Star has not simply survived for a quarter century but has grown from strength to strength and now it would hardly be an overstatement to say that it, transcending the boundary of a newspaper, has become an institution in the field.
The Daily Star arrived in the Bangladeshi media scene at a critical juncture of the country’s history. An autocratic regime was just ousted from power by the people and democracy was returning with slow but steady steps. People were looking towards the future with a heady mixture of awe and expectation. The Daily Star perfectly captured the ethos of the period under the capable leadership of SM Ali, the internationally acclaimed doyen of English journalism in Bangladesh. After Ali passed away the baton was handed over to Mahfuz Anam who proved to be a worthy successor.
In fact, The Daily Star marked the beginning of a new era in English language journalism in Bangladesh. Instead of the usually conservative and staid style of traditional English journalism in the country, the newspaper brought a vibrant, bold and also a flamboyant style to its reporting and analysis of news. A bright group of relatively young media professionals tried their best to bring about a change in the local media landscape. It was not just change for its own sake as the newspaper brought about many innovations and paved the way for other English newspapers. Among the trendsetting ways of the newspaper one important thing was the way they used modern mass communication strategies. They supported various important social causes and interacted with its readers in a way that made the latter develop a sense of belonging to the newspaper. The Daily Star actually created new readers for English newspapers and the way the paper managed to attract the youth is admirable indeed.
Of course, it has not been all smooth sailing for The Daily Star. Like other media outlets in this country it too had its share of troubles. However, remaining steadfast in following certain principles and policies has helped it remain a newspaper which is trusted by its readers.
We wholeheartedly congratulate The Daily Star for completing 25 years and hope that in the days ahead it will hold on to the high standards of journalism that has made it a powerful presence in Bangladeshi media.
