Demanding an end to food adulteration and to create awareness about the malpractice, locals formed a human chain at Thakurgaon Chowrasta in the district town yesterday. RDRS, a non-governmental organisation, arranged the programme. Speakers at the programme voiced against selling of adulterated food by traders and demanded measures to stop the practice in all the markets of Bangladesh. They urged the common people to raise their voice against it and thus help make a healthy and disease free society. They urged the government to take proper steps to stop food adulteration in upcoming Ramzan and formulate stringent laws against food adulteration. A cross-section of people, including government officials, public representatives, advocates, journalists, social and NGO activists, teachers and students took part in the hour-long programme. Among others, district woman affairs officer Morshed Ali Khan, Thakurgaon Municipality councilor Droupodi Agorwala, advocate Mahmuda Akter, general secretary of Jatia Sangbadik Sangstha, Thakurgaon district unit Asaduzzaman Asad, socialist Masud Ahemed Suborno, RDRS Programme Officer Ziaul Islam, Abu Zahed, Project Manager Aminul Islam, senior Social Development Officer Aysha Siddika and senior Health Officer Jahangir Alam spoke on the occasion.
