The Awami League joint general secretary, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, yesterday alleged that the BNP has established militancy in the country, having patronised them for long. This was made clear by the recent statement of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.
“During the meeting between Modi and BNP chief Khaleda Zia, the former told Khaleda that India doesn’t like fundamentalism and terrorism. This proves that the BNP supports militancy. Besides, it is known to all that the BNP has been patronising militants for long,” he said.
He was talking to reporters after exchanging views with the AL's local leaders at Kushtia.
About the BNP’s stand towards India, the AL lawmaker said it has been indulging in anti-India politics since its inception. During the visit of the Indian Premier, the party tried to show that it is pro-India, but it is now back to its old ways, he added.
At a separate programme, AL lawmaker and food minister, Quamrul Islam, said the BNP will turn into a political party like the Muslim League before the next general election.
“The party is heading towards its destruction for wrong decisions and policies. I think the party will split into various factions like the Muslim League before the next polls,” he said.
He was addressing a discussion organised on the occasion of "jail release day" of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at the National Press Club in the city.
Referring to the BNP’s relations with the Jamaat, the AL leader said the party had entered into an entente with militancy. Along with the Jamaat, the BNP killed innocent people by hurling petrol bombs in the name of political movement. Now the party is saying that it is only an electoral alliance.
“They made such statements only to satisfy the Indian Premier. But Modi made it clear that India is against militancy. The BNP will not eventually succeed, as all are aware about relations between it and the Jamaat,” he said.
He called upon the people to be united to root out anti-Liberation forces from the country.
