BWDB employee among two jailed

Faridpur: A special court yesterday sentenced two people including an employee of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) to five years’ imprisonment in a case filed for embezzling 2.086 metric tons (mts) of wheat under a government project in 2002, reports UNB. The convicts were identified as AKM Mahiuddin, deputy assistant engineer of BWDB Bhanga sub-division and Abdul Karim Matubbar, former member of Manikdah union parishad.
The court also fined them Tk 25,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment. Maniruzzaman Khan, deputy director of Faridpur unit Anti-Corruption Commission, said Hafizur Rahman, assistant inspector of Faridpur ACC caught two people red handed while embezzling 2.086 metric tons of wheat under the project of re-dredging of Fukurhati drainage system at Chatla in Bhanga upazila on August 21, 2002.
Later he filed a case with Bhanga Police Station. After examining records and witnesses, Judge ASM Zahurul Islam of Special Judge Court handed down the verdict.
