Bangladesh shattered Namibia’s aspiration of producing yet another upset in a game of unwavering resolve yesterday when they mauled them by eight wickets at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium, Cox’s Bazar. The spinners scripted the victory against the African nation who appeared as surprise package by beating Scotland and defending champions South Africa. Sharing seven wickets amongst them, the spinner brought the Namibia down to the earth and thereby justified the tag of favourtie in emphatic fashion. Given the form and gulf of difference in strength between the two teams, it should be a mismatch. And it was materialised truly on ground as Bangladesh skittled Namibia out for just 65 runs in 32.5 overs. The hosts took just 16 overs to gun down the target, which meant 204 balls remained unused, a stat that showed how embarrassing the match was for Namibia. While Bangladesh sealed the expected victory like a dominant team, skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraj etched his name to the folklore of the youth ODI cricket after his teammate Nazmul Hasan Shanto. Miraj claimed two for 12 in the match to be the highest wicket-taker at this level. He took his wicket-tally to 74 in 53 matches, bettering the record of Pakistan’s Imad Wasim who had 73 wickets in 49 matches. Earlier in the last match, Shanto became the highest run-getter at youth cricket.
Bangladesh, however, will take on Nepal at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Friday while Namibia face off India in the quarterfinal at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium on Saturday. Bangladesh Under-19s’ spin quartet of Saleh Ahmed Shawon (two for 10), Mehedi Hasan Miraz (two for 12), Ariful Islam (two for nine) and Saeed Sarkar (one for two) pounded Namibia right from the words go after pacer Saifuddin made the breakthrough having dismissed opener Loftie Elaton for five.
Wicket-keeper Zakir Hasan then effected a run-out to leave the visitors 10 for two. Namibia’s sensational collapse however didn’t look imminent when Niko Davin and Lohan Louwrens were batting with caution, if not with solid approach.
They were struggling against the spinners and conceded maiden after maiden but somehow glued to the wicket. Saleh Ahmed Shawon broke the stubborn partnership by removing Davin for 19, the highest scorer for Namibia and left the opponent for 37 for three. His dismissal sparked the collapse what was on the cards always. With other spinner joining the party, Namibia’s wickets were falling like a pack of cards even though Luwrense battled hard. He was the other batsman to make double-digit scores, as none of the other batsmen managed more than five runs. After dismissing Namibia in 32.5 overs, Bangladesh faltered early in their chase, losing both openers by the fifth over for 13 runs. Joyraz then came in and took charge of the innings with a patient knock. Joyraz and Nazmul Hossain Shanto, ensured no other Bangladesh wickets fell, finishing the chase in 16 overs. The victory put Bangladesh on top of Group A, having won all three games.
