Gazipur BCL chiefs elder brother stabs 3 DB men

Our Correspondent, Gazipur

Three members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police (DB) were injured in a knife attack by a man in Shibbari area of Gazipur city on Monday night. The attacker, Sharafat Ali, son of late Abdul Hai, is an elder brother of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Gazipur city unit President Ershad Hossain and Gazipur city Juba League joint convenor Alamgir Hossain. The family, however, claimed that the attacker was mentally ill and did not have any involvement with any political party. Sharafat was arrested from the spot with a knife. The injured DB members were identified as Sub-Inspector Mohammed Moniruzzaman, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammed Sumon and Constable Mohmmed Ershad. The injured policemen were taken to Gazipur Shahid Taz Uddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for treatment. Gazipur DB Police OC Amir Hossain said, Sharafat Hossain and some of his associates were challenged by a DB team due to suspicious activity in front of a tea stall near Shibbari microbus stand of Gazipur city on Monday at around 8.30 pm. At one stage, Sharafat locked into an altercation with DB SI Moniruzzaman and attacked him with a knife. Hearing the cry of Moniruzzaman, two other DB members, Sumon and Ershad, rushed to the spot and tried to save him. But Sharafat also attacked the two with knife and injured them. Police members in the area then fired a blank round from a shotgun and arrested Sharafat with the knife. When contacted, Joydebpur Police Station OC Khandakar  Rezaul Hasan said Sharafat Hossain is a criminal and there are several cases against him and his brothers for extortion, land grabbing and other criminal activities. A case has been filed with the station over Monday’s attack on DB members, he added. Meanwhile, Gazipur City BCL President Ershad Hossain, a younger brother of the attacker, claimed that Sharafat is mentally ill. “Several times we got him treated by different physicians. He is not involved with any political party,” the city BCL president said. He also claimed that the incident took place due to a mis-understanding with the DB police team when Sharafat was passing time in front of a tea stall in the area with his friends. “It is true that he attacked the DB police members with a knife he took from the tea stall, as he is a mental patient,” Ershad added.
