Charge framing deferred for fourth time

STAFF REPORTER

A Dhaka court yesterday deferred, for the fourth time, the charge framing hearing against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of ruling Awami League MP Pinu Khan, in a case filed for shooting two people to death in Eskaton area of the capital in April last year.
The Second Additional Sessions Judge of Dhaka, Samsun Naher, fixed February 28 for the next hearing.
On September 23, the court deferred for the first time the hearing of charge framing against Bakhtiar Alam Rony until November 22 granting a time petition filed by the prosecution as the sole accused was not produced before the court.
On November 22, the court of Shamsun Nahar fixed January 4 for hearing on charge framing against Rony in the case as the accused Rony was again not produced before the court.
On January 04, the same Second Additional Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court deferred the charge framing hearing till February 2 after the defence counsel pleaded for time extension. And yesterday, the court deferred the hearing for the fourth time till February 28 over illness of the accused.
During yesterday’s session, the defense lawyer submitted petition to defer the hearing claiming that accused Rony was ill and his main lawyer was busy in the Dhaka Bar Council election. However, Rony was present at the court. Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Maksud also did not oppose the defence petition.
According to police investigation, Rony opened fire indiscriminately on people near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car on April 13 last year, leaving two people critically injured. Later, injured rickshawpuller Abdul Hakim died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 15 and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub died on April 23. A case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection on April 15.  Rony, arrested on May 31 based on information provided by his driver Imran Fakir, was questioned in police custody for 10 days in three phases. On July 21, investigation officer DB Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das pressed charges against Rony in court. On August 13, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court accepted the charge sheet against Bakhtiar Alam Rony in the case filed over killing two people through reckless shooting on the street in April.
His friends – Kamal Mahmood, Md Jahangir, Tiger Kamal – and driver Imran had earlier issued judicial statements before the court.
