Lankan team meets UGC chief
A three-member Sri Lankan delegation led by Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Dhaka
Yasoja Gunasekera called on Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, University Grants Commission at UGC auditorium in the capital yesterday.
During the meeting they discussed matters relating to Sri Lankan students’ admission into the Medical and Dental Courses of Bangladesh, said a press release.
Other members of the delegation included Secretary of Ministry of Higher Education and Highways DC Dissanayake and Consultant Surgeon, of National Hospital Dr Lalantha A Ranasinghe.
UGC Chairman urged the Sri Lankan students to be cautious to get admission to institutes in the private sector of Bangladesh for medical and dental education.

Shops fined 2.87 lakh

The regional office of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) fined a total of 24 shop-owners in Rajshahi Taka 2.87 lakh in January for selling and manufacturing adulterated food items.
BSTI in association with respective district administration formed 20 mobile courts and found the shops guilty of manufacturing, possessing and selling of substandard and unhygienic food items in addition to violating BSTI rules and regulations.
The court also realised Taka 2.87 lakh from the shop owners.
Mourtoza Hossain Shah, Director of BSTI, said the regional office has expedited drives against the manufacturer of substandard and adulterated foods. Such drives will continue in the days to come for the greater interest of the public.

Missing girl found dead

Police recovered the body of a school girl from Sundardi village under Gournadi upazila of the district yesterday morning, two days after she went missing.
The deceased was identified as Kabita Bapary, 13, a student of class eight of a local school and daughter of Ainal Bapary of the same village.
Being informed by locals, police recovered the body with hands and legs tied up with rope, from a pond of the village at around 7 am.
Family sources said Kabita went missing since last Sunday.
The body was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed in this connection.

Minister leaves for Qatar

A six-member delegation led by Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam Bsc left Dhaka for Qatar yesterday.
During their visit, the team will meet Labour and Employment Minister of Qatar and discuss various issues including infrastructure development and sending manpower to Qatar, an official handout said here.
Other team members are Director General of Wage Earners’ Welfare Board Gazi Mohammad Julhas, Joint Secretary of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry M Abdur Rauf, Deputy Secretary of the ministry Badrul Ariffin, Director of the Prime Minister’s Office M Nurul Islam and the minister’s personal secretary Mohsin Chowdhury.
The minister is scheduled to return home on February 6.
