Aiming to minimize the sufferings of passengers, the government has decided to cancel the lease system of ferry ghats from July 1, said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan. The minister came up with the government decision while talking to reporters after inaugurating a ferry service on Matlab-Munshiganj route at Kalipur Ghat in Matlab upazila in the afternoon, reports UNB. Once the lease system is cancelled, people will not have to pay extra charge in the name of toll, he said. Besides, the minister announced to provide Tk 1.5 lakh as compensation to the families of the victims who may die in any possible river accident. Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, local MP Mrinal Kanti, deputy commissioner of the district Ismail Hossain were, among others, present. Besides, the meeting decided that no water vessel could be overloaded with passengers or goods, and launches must depart ghats before crossing the load level during the Eid. It said water vessels cannot take any passenger while moving.
