About 59 photographs, some rare ones from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s visit to China in 1957, were put on display for a day at an exhibition celebrating 40 years of friendship between China and Bangladesh on Monday at a hotel in the capital.
Other photos depicting China’s involvement in Bangladesh’s socio-economic development, from building bridges to investing in industry, were showcased at the exhibition, organised by the Bangladesh China People’s Friendship Association and sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.
A row of black-and-white photographs of Sheikh Mujib visiting Shanghai, Beijing (then Peking) and some agricultural and industrial projects in China started off the display. There was another one of Bangabandhu giving a speech to welcome then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai to Dhaka in 1964.
The show continued with photos of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s first visit to China in 1996 and her subsequent visits. They were also photos that offered glimpses of Chinese experts and machinery helping to build bridges, a power plant, a coal mine, and even excavating an ancient heritage site in Bangladesh.
“These are snapshot of some memorable moments and events between China and Bangladesh, they only cover a few decades. But our friendship is much more than what this exhibition offers,” Ambassador Ma Mingqiang said at the brief inaugural ceremony.  Bangladesh is a major trading partner and an investment destination for China, the ambassador added.
Chief guest HT Imam, an adviser to the PM, said Bangladesh-China friendship was built “on the crossroads of civilisation” more than a thousand years ago and there have been exchanges in science, culture, trade etc. since.
Invited members of the Chinese community in Dhaka, politicians, diplomats and local   businessmen visited the exhibition, held in the ballroom of Westin Hotel in Gulshan.
