Hilsa conservation fund to boost production stressed

UNB

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque yesterday stressed the need for establishing a hilsa conservation trust fund to boost the production of the delicious fish, reports UNB. “I express my gratitude to Darwin-Hilsa Project for taking this initiative. Establishment of hilsa conservation trust fund is very timely as our hilsa is under pressure of exploitation due to the growing population and climate change effects,” he told a meeting.
The meeting was organised at a city hotel to discuss proposals for launching hilsa conservation trust fund, aiming to reduce the government’s financial burden. Hilsa is one of the most important single species of fisheries in the Bay of Bengal. More than half a million people depend on it for their livelihood, while it provides nutrition to 250 million people. Fisheries and Livestock secretary Dr Shelina Afroza, director general of the Department of Fisheries Dr Syed Arif Azad and researcher Dr Essam Yassin Mohammed, among others, spoke at the meeting.
Minister Sayedul Hoque said all possible measures will be taken by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock for establishment of the Hilsa Conservation Trust Fund in Bangladesh for sustainable development, conservation and management of the national fish.
