The month-long Muslin Festival 2016 will be inaugurated on February 5 at 3:30pm at the Nalinikanta Bhattasali Gallery, Bangladesh National Museum in the city’s Shahbag area. On the occasion of upcoming festival, a press conference was held at Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum on January 31. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Cultural Affairs Secretary Begum Akhtari Momtaz, Executive Director of BRAC Dr Muhammad Musa, Director General of Bangladesh National Museum Faizul Latif Chowdhury and CEO of Drik Saiful Islam attend the event and spoke about the festival.
Cultural Affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor applauded the initiative and thanked Bangladesh National Museum, Aarong and Drik for this effort of reviving the heritage of Bengal Muslin.
Muslin project is organised by Drik in partnership with Aarong and Bangladesh National Museum. The project will investigate the potential of reviving Muslin production and explore how this sought for textile of the past can integrate with contemporary clothing designs.
The festival focuses to tell the story of Bengal Muslin, the fabled fabric of Bengal, its unique history and contribution, through a series of events and activities. The festival’s aim is to recreate the story of this legendary textile that was used by Western and Mughal courts, raise awareness of its rich heritage and the distinctive impact it had upon the world in terms of textile artistry and global trade.
On the other hand, through a special cultural show at Ahsan Manzil on February 6, muslin’s past, present and future will be displayed. The festival will also feature the launching of a publication titled ‘Muslin. Our Story’, launch of the trailer for a documentary film ‘Legend of the Loom’, and seminars.l
