The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will begin the hearing on an appeal filed by Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali against an International Crimes Tribunal verdict that had awarded him death penalty for wartime offences. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha will start the hearing. The Supreme Court yesterday enlisted the matter at number six of the daily cause list. Earlier, the same bench of the apex court on January 6 fixed February 2 for hearing on the appeal following a time prayer made by defence lawyer Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain. The defence lawyer sought time while the appeal came up before the apex court for an order. On November 2, 2014, the then International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Quasem to death for crimes against humanity in 1971.
