Minority community people seek security

Leaders of Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikko Parishad and Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, Jessore district unit, in a joint press conference at Jessore Press Club at noontoday demanded continuous security for the cobbler community in Parala village under Monirampur Upazila, Jessore. General Secretary, Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, Jessore district unit, Dipankar Das Ratan, read out the written statement in the presence of General Secretary, Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikko Parishad, Jessore district unit, Santohs Dutta and other leaders.
Minority leaders at the press conference informed that activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, led by Durbadanga Union Unit Convener of BCL, Abu Sayeed and Ibrahim along with Rafiqul Islam, Khalil, Kabir Hossain, Mamun, Rocky Hossain, Hiro Hossain and Iqbal Hossain, swooped down on the cobbler cluster on January 30, wounding 15 of them. The activists damaged four houses, set two other houses on fire, and attacked a temple.
Minority leaders demanded compensation for the victims and continuous security. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Jessore, Shafin Mahmud, said that the police arrested three of the accused after filing a case on Sunday. The main accused, Sayeed, is still at large, said locals and the police.
Local lawmaker Swapan Bhattacharya; Deputy Commissioner Dr Humayun Kabir; and Superintendent of Police, Jessore, Anisur Rahman visited the spot on Sunday and assured victims that strict action would be taken against the culprits. Shafin told reporters that a case has been lodged with the police station, naming 15 and another unnamed 15 involved in the attack. However, the police could not arrest BCL leader, Sayeed, he said.
Resident of cobbler cluster Gobinda Das said that armed terrorists led by Sayeed and Ibrahim attacked residents of the cluster at Durbadanga on Saturday. “The miscreants set the residences of Mukunda Das and Nilpada Das along with mine on fire,” he said. He also said that at least 15 people, including Mukunda Das, Jitendra Das, Purnima Das, Sakali Rani, Adhir Das, Nilpada Das and himself were wounded in the attack. Headmaster, Satgati Secondary School, Mimol Kumar, said that locals protested as some miscreants started attacking the three SSC examinees on their way home from school on Saturday.
