Zero tolerance policy to stop illegal VoIP

STAFF REPORTER

The government has taken measures to stop illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
“The government is following zero tolerance policy to stop illegal VoIP and we have already taken some measures to bring down the illegal call termination to zero” the State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Division Tarana Halim told The Independent yesterday.
She also said, “We published ad in newspaper seeking information from the people about the illegal VoIP businessmen. Law enforcement agencies also continue their drive to arrest the people involved in illegal VoIP.”
Putting the issues of call termination and quality of service as the top most priority agendas, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Dr Shahjahan Mahmood earlier vowed to set up benchmark for call termination.
“My first priority is to set up a standard level of call termination which could be followed as benchmark Mahmood said at that time.
Tarana said, government has given permission to form the IGW Operators Forum (IOF) in a bid to stop illegal VoIP. Incoming calls through International Gateway (IGW) have almost doubled but, the rate of illegal call termination – which means illegal routing of phone calls from one company to another – is still very high in the country, depriving the government of huge revenue, she said.
About third most main concern, the regulator chief said “I must work for increasing people’s trust and respect overcoming any kind of false propaganda prevailing in the market against the BTRC”.
Talking on illegal uses of VoIP, Dr Mahmmood who worked for US Navy before joining BTRC said the issue also might get priority. “We’ll soon sit in commission meeting and also take help of technical experts to formulate a comprehensive “master plan” to curb the illegal uses of VoIP,” he added.
Mentioning his believe on transparency and openness, the BTRC Chief said if any organisation has not the two qualities, the organisation would not win people’s respect and trust.
Dr Shahjahan Mahmood sought cooperation from the journalists as well as all the industry people for the betterment of the telecom sector.
