In the two inconsequential matches of ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, New Zealand and Afghanistan won their respective games to end the group phase at least with one victory. Both of the teams’ hopes to qualify in the knock-out stage were shattered earlier after they lost two consecutive matches.
While New Zealand earned the consolation victory in the Group D, beating Ireland by four wickets at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Afghanistan secured a four-wicket victory over Canada in a low-scoring affair at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
In the match of Group C, Tariq Stanikzai scored 56 off 48 balls, with nine fours and a six, as Afghanistan chased down a target of 148 in only 24.1 overs. They lost a few wickets while doing so, though, with left-arm spinner Shlok Patel and off-spinner Miraj Patel sharing five wickets between them.
Having chosen to bat, Canada lost three of their top four for ducks and slipped to 31 for 4 before their captain Abraash Khan (33) and Arslan Khan (38) put on the only substantial partnership of their innings, 62 for the fifth wicket.  However still they were bowled out for 147 off the last ball of their allotted 50 overs.
Afghanistan captain Ihsanullah Janat said his team gained valuable experience playing against teams like Pakistan and Sri Lanka. “This tournament will help the players improve their game. Its been a very good learning experience,” he said.
New Zealand who were favourite to qualify in the knock-out stage from Group A alongside India, beat Ireland by four wickets thanks to Finn Allen’s 97. Allen hit nine fours and four sixes in his 76 balls knock which helped the Kiwis to zoom to the target of 213 in 40.1 overs after Ireland posted 212 before being all out in 47.5 overs. Dale Phillips made 58 to complement Allen’s 97.
Finn Allen later said: “There is a lot to look forward in the Plate Championship as we can come up against sides like South Africa.
