CHITTAGONG: Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) in a drive yesterday filed nearly 1000 cases against the owners of CNG-run auto- rickshaws for plying without metres, reports BSS.
CMP Traffic Department filed the cases against the owners of CNG-run auto-rickshaws for defying government order to install metres in their vehicles within the deadline that expired on Sunday.
Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader in a meeting in Chittagong on Sunday categorically said that CNG-run auto-rickshaws in Chittagong were supposed to ply on metres from November last year but the time was extended till January 31 upon request from the owners. "No more time shall be given as I have taken it as a challenge and commitment", he asserted saying that he had been successful in Dhaka and wanted the same in Chittagong.
With nod of the minister, the CMP went on hard-line against metre-less CNG-auto rickshaws from yesterday. CMP sources said CMP Traffic Department's North Zone filed 550 cases while the South Zone filed 383 cases from 1pm to 3pm yesterday.
CMP Additional Commissioner (administration, finance & traffic) AKM Shahidur Rahman said the owners of the vehicles were asked to contact the respective traffic offices and pay fines in order to dispose of the cases.
