President Abdul Hamid yesterday advised Bangladesh Navy to utilise the potentials of the sea-based ‘blue economy’ with a view to accelerating the country's economic development, reports UNB.
Abdul Hamid made the statement when newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Mohammed Nizamuddin Ahmed made a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
As Bangladesh has successfully settled disputes over maritime boundary with India and Myanmar under the United Nations in recent years, the president stressed the need for using vast areas and huge resources in the Bay of Bengal in a sustainable way and keeping the eco-system intact. The term ‘blue economy’ has gained popularity in development discourse across the world.
During the meeting, president Hamid advised the navy chief to take necessary steps to stop river pollution, especially in the River Buriganga. He hoped the development of Bangladesh Navy would continue under his leadership.
Ahmed expressed gratitude to the President as he was made the navy chief. He said Bangladesh Navy would continue to put efforts for thedevelopment of the country by utilising sea resources.
The new navy chief sought the President's cooperation to discharge his duties. Secretaries of the President Office were present. Mentionable that the newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed, on January 27 took over command of the Bangladesh Navy after being promoted from the rank of Rear Admiral.
The outgoing Navy chief, Admiral Muhammad Farid Habib, handed over charge at a ceremony at the naval headquarters in Banani. Principal staff officers, all area commanders and officers concerned were present. The new Navy chief signed the command taking over book at the office of the CNS. He was appointed Chief of Naval Staff on January 21.
