RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a daylong consultation workshop in Rajshahi underscored the need for holistic approach for sound and healthy ecosystem relating to all sectors so that the existing biodiversity and other living beings could be protected from all threats particularly the adverse impact of climate change, reports BSS.
They viewed adverse impact of climate change has started posing a serious threat to the farming sector alongside overall living and livelihood condition in vast barind tract comprising the districts of Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj.
Ministry of Environment and Forest organised the workshop titled “Developing Targets Indicators and Strategies of Updated NBSAP” at Nanking Darbar Hall yesterday.
More than 75 officials representing forestry department, government, non-government organisations concerned and other stakeholders attended the workshop and actively took part in its group discussions.
Additional Secretary to the Environment Ministry Nurul Karim addressed the workshop as chief guest with Raisul Islam Mondal, Director of Environment Directorate, in the chair. Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed and Additional Commissioner Munir Hossain spoke as special guests.
The meeting observed that the adverse situation caused by the climate change has directly been making negative impact on the forestry, biodiversity, ecosystem, water, sanitation, overall public health and sustainable livelihood in the region.
Substantial and sustainable water and sanitation related modern technologies have become an urgent need to face the natural catastrophe.
Although the region has achieved sustainable progress in increasing food grain production through strong liberalised smallholders and public irrigation, groundwater use for irrigation is a growing matter of concern in the barind tract.
