AGENCIES, LONDON: Daniel Vettori believes New Zealand could be on the cusp of something special under Brendon McCullum.
Despite being hammered by 210 runs against England in the opening one-day international at Edgbaston, the Kiwis earned plenty of admirers for the aggressive approach they displayed in the Test series.
The tourists deservedly walked away with a 1-1 draw, winning their first Test in England since 1999 at Headingley last week, meaning they are now unbeaten in seven series in the longest format.
Factor in their run to the World Cup final on home soil earlier this year and it is clear momentum is building for the Black Caps, for whom Tim Southee and Trent Boult form an excellent new-ball partnership while the likes of Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and McCullum provide depth in the batting line-up.
According to former New Zealand spinner Vettori, if those five players can continue their development then there is no telling what they can achieve.
“You go the whole through one to 11, there’s some of the best players that have ever played for New Zealand in that side at the moment,” Vettori told Press Association Sport.
“I think you look over the last 18 months to two years, the performances and results have been exceptional.
“The likes of Boult and Southee, in particular, when you’ve got two fast bowlers going as well as they have and their top order batting, with Kane, Ross and Brendon, those are the characteristics of really good teams.
“We’re fortunate enough to have that so hopefully they can stay injury-free and keep performing.”
