Rakibul Islam Shifat of BKSP and Nafisa Maliat of Dhanmondi Club won a gold medal each on the opening day of the Korea Ambassador Cup Taekwondo Championship which began yesterday at the National Sports Council Gymnasium in the capital.
Rakib won the gold in the men’s junior group 45-55 Kg weight category. He defeated Shakil Ahmed of Adamjee Cantonment School & College in the final. Tanvir of Mirpur Indoor and Rakib Raihan of BN College shared the two bronze medals.
On the other hand, Nafisa also won her gold medal in the same weight category of women’s junior group. She beat Bushra of Bandarban, while Zannatul Akhtar of Adamjee Cantonment College and Sharmin Sultana also of the same institution clinched the two bronze medals.
Over 350 boys and girls drawn from different schools, colleges and universities of the country are talking part in the two day meet.
Lee yun-young, the South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh, who is sponsoring the championship, inaugurated the meet as chief guest. Prof Hosne Ara, principal of Eden Women’s College and former famed footballer Kaiser Hamid were present as special guests. Bangladesh Taekwondo Federation president Kazi Morshed Hossain Kamal presided over the opening ceremony.
Dhaka South Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon will distribute prizes today as chief guest.
