Bangladesh suffered a shocking defeat in their first encounter of the World Cup qualifying round when they conceded a 3-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
It was very important match for Bangladesh as they desperately needed to win the home match. But it was very much disappointing that the hosts went down displaying a very hopeless game with trailing by 1-3 before the break.
All the four goals were scored in the first half when Zemlinuhin Anton struck twice, Bernhardt Edgar added one goal for Kyrgyzstan and Lux Vitalij also of Kyrgyzstan scored an own goal.
Kyrgyzstan initiated the scoring with a free kick inside eight minutes of the game and again it was set piece.
Bangladesh, who appointed a goalkeeper coach for avoiding the set piece goals but nothing prevent them from conceding goals from set piece.
Bangladesh conceded the lead in the eighth minute when Hementa Biswas committed an unnecessary foul to Lux Vitalij just five yards away from the box. Zemlinuhin Anton bemused Bangladesh goalkeeper Rassel with a powerful kick as the former failed to judge the flight of the ball as it entered into net just kissing the side post (1-0).
The visitors turned out to be more aggressive to increase the advantage and made it success on 22nd minute and it was from a penalty. Bangladesh saw another disaster when Singaporean referee awarded a penalty for a minor foul. Bangladesh defender Yeamin Munna just pushed down Maier Viktor while trying to clear a ball inside area. But referee Sukhbir Singh whistled for a spot kick with Bernhardt Edgar converted the penalty. Although Rassel dived to his right side and tried to stop the ball as it entered into the net after touching his fingers (2-0).
Trailing by 0-2 Bangladesh looked a bit organised and also reduced the margin on half an hour mark. This time Bangladesh produced their first real attack just from the midway and Yeamin Munna combined with Jamal Bhuiyan sent a superb cross inside the area and forced Kyrgyzstan to save the situation at the cost of a corner.
Captain Mamnul Islam, who might be the best performer of the match, took his trademark flank kick and one of Kyrgyzstan players while trying to save it nodded the ball into their own net (1-2).
Thereafter Kyrgyzstan did not give Bangladesh any chance to bounce back as they consolidated the lead with scoring another goal on 42nd minute utilising a lapse committed by Bangladesh defenders.
It was a strong combined attack down the right side and the defenders had time to clear it but for the shakiness of the defenders, Zemlinuhin Anton excellently utilised the advantage with taking a powerful left footer that went into the top corner of the net while the goalkeeper just leapt into the air only after the ball crossing the goal-line (3-1).
In fact Kyrgyzstan proved that FIFA ranking is not always the real picture of a team’s strength. Currently Bangladesh stand on 166 and Kyrgyzstan occupy 177th place, according to latest FIFA ranking.
Bangladesh, who were beaten in every position to Kyrgyzstan, in a sense could not play their usual game. They looked to be disorganised side and for most of the time in first half they were very indiscipline and committed plenty of wrong passes.
Although they tried hard to come back in the second half with demonstrating better performance and came closer to score goal but the forwards’ feeble works prevented the home team from scoring any further goal.
