Metro rail through DU campus

Students submit memo to VC urging change of route

DU Correspondent

A group of students under the banner of ‘General Students of Dhaka University’ yesterday submitted a memorandum to Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique urging the change of the proposed metro rail route, planned to be made through the Dhaka University campus.
Around 12.20 pm representatives of the students met DU VC at his office yesterday.
Coming back from the VC office students said that “Vice-chancellor has permitted us to meet the higher authority regarding this issue but disagreed with our demand”.
Sources said that they would go to Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges on February 2 or 3 to submit another memorandum.
“Students also urged for an open discussion on Raju sculpture premises with the other group of DU students who want metro rail route through DU campus”. Earlier, students gathered at Raju sculpture premises and chanted slogans “We are not against the development; we also demand to change metro rail route”.
Students said that their point of concern is about the historical places of the campus.
Earlier on January 15 Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said “The metro rail route cannot be changed and the main construction activities of the rail project will begin from March”. “We've fixed the route after holding discussions with Dhaka University (DU) authorities. The metro rail will be constructed on the pillars, not on the ground surface. Besides, modern technology will be used to control sound pollution,” the minister told reporters, before taking part in a function at Dhakeswari Mandir on the day. He brushed aside suggestions of any sound pollution in connection with the metro rail in DU areas. A station will be set up near the campus so that DU students can easily avail of the rail service, Quader said.
Mentionable that, students of the Dhaka University (DU) have split into two opposing groups, with both separately submitting memorandums to the university’s vice chancellor (VC), AAMS Arefin Siddique, over the proposed metro rail project through the DU campus. While one group wants the metro rail route to be changed, the other favours the rail route on the campus. They have submitted memorandums on January18 to the VC in support of their respective demands and also announced opposing programmes.
The Left-leaning students’ organisation, the Chhatra Union, on the day submitted a memorandum to VC, demanding a change in the metro rail route through the campus. But after that, DU non-resident students travelling on DU buses—Chaitali, Boishakhi and Khonika—submitted another memorandum to the VC, demanding a metro rail route through the campus.
