Nepal created the first upset of the ICC Under-19 World Cup by pulling off a dramatic 32-run win over New Zealand at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium at Fatullah yesterday.
When the encounter between the two sides was speculated to be a one-sided affair, Nepal propped up their game in sensational fashion to leave the Kiwis in a state of confusion.
In group D game, the ICC associates Nepal who also beat Bangladesh in 2000 Under-19 World Cup, compiled a challenging 238 for seven after opting to bat first. Dipendra Singh Airee, the medium fast bowler then rocked the New Zealand batting, claiming three for 24 and bowled the out for 206 in 47.1 overs.
Captain Raju Rijal led the batting, scoring 48 runs. He combined for a 61-run partnership with Aarif Sheikh (39), to provide the backbone of the innings. Raju hammered six fours in his 65 balls knock. Some handy middle-order contributions, including a 23-ball 35 from Kushal Bhurtel helped Nepal to a competitive total. Bhurtel sent the ball across the rope for five times. Nathan Smith picked up three wickets but went for 58 runs in his 10 overs.
Nepal’s brilliant ground-fielding helped them shock New Zealand youth indeed. They effected three run outs dismissal including that of Dale Phillips who batted at No. 7 to keep the side’s hope alive. Phillips scored 41 runs but the highest scorer of the side was opener Glenn Phillips who made 52 runs.
The Kiwis had a middling start to the chase, Glenn Phillips (52) and Josh Finnie (37) strung together a 72-run stand. However, both fell in quick succession and the innings soon fell apart. It looked like the contest was done before Dale Phillips kept New Zealand in the hunt with 41, and along with Nathan Smith brought the equation down from 95 off 60 to 41 off 24. Dipendra Singh Airee then swung the game decisively in Nepal's favour with a double strike that effectively killed the match.
Raju Rijal however was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant knock .
