In a bid to improve the performance of the national women team, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has planned to get underway the maiden edition of Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) in the first week of February ahead of the 2016 ICC Women’s World Twenty20.
The fifth edition of the Women’s World T20 is scheduled to be held in the next door India in between March 15 and April 3. It’ll be run beside the ICC Men’s World T20 2016 simultaneously.
On the basis of the performance, the board has meanwhile been picked 29 additional players by selectors from the recently concluded Premier Division Cricket League alongside the 23-member Bangladesh women’s preliminary squad.
Players, who have been divided into four groups, will take part in the tournament, organised by BCB as a part of preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
Under the supervision of the head coach Janak Gamage, all the players have been practicing regularly. They have played a string of practice matches at City Club ground in the capital.
Abdul Awal Chowdhury Bhulu, chairman of BCB women’s wing, admitted the matter and said that they have chalked out all the preparation for the tournament.
“We’ve planned to organize a tournament for women in the aspect of men’s BCL. After chalking out the preparation we’ve decided to start the tournament at City Club and Gulshan Youth Club grounds. But these grounds are comparatively small in sizes than the World Cup’s venues. In that consideration, we drew back from our previous decision late on,” said Abdul Awal Chowdhury.
“We start, thereafter, looking for the big grounds but the bulk of the grounds across the country were busy due to the hectic schedule of the T20 home series against Zimbabwe, BCL coupled with the warm-up matches of the U-19 World Cup,” Bhulu told The Independent.
“The warm-up matches have already been finished. We’ll get at least the grounds of the BKSP and Fatullah Outer. We’re trying to rope in those venues. Hopefully we manage it within the next couple of days and could start the tournament in the first week of February,” he added.
About franchisee, Wing’s chairman said, “We’re discussing with some corporate houses to be franchisees for the teams of the tournament. But we’re yet to manage any corporate houses.”
