University Sports Facilities

Sports is one of the important parts of education. It helps to develop physical fitness and mental well-being. From primary to tertiary level, in every sector of educational life, the importance of sports is immeasurable. In university life, besides studying, participating in sports and other physical activities, help to create a network within the intra-university and inter-university as well. As a result, a relationship among the social communities builds up. These young people learn to work in a team, which helps them in future career life.

This week Y&I is focusing the sports facilities of some public and private universities in Bangladesh.

University of Dhaka

To help and guide students in games and sports the university has well-equipped facilities in both in-door and out-door games. “Sports is kind of a physical exercise with entertainment. This is compulsory for the students. Sports refresh minds, as a result students can concentrate on education and other social activities. Also, sports increase productivity so that they get success in their performance”, said Abu Faysal Ahmed, assistant director of Physical Education Centre.
According to Faysal, the Physical Education Centre has a playground which is the official stadium of the university. The university has different sports facilities for the students like, cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, table tennis, chess, and many more.  Every year the centre hosts inter-departments, inter-hall, inter-universities and national level in different games and sports. Besides, the centre has a modern swimming pool complex. With Tk. 100 per month any student of the university can swim in the pool. The university has a gymnasium, where students can gym with very low cost, Tk. 200 per year. Swimming pool and gymnasium have different schedule system, as a result, the male students and female students can swim and gym separately. Including swimming and gym, every sector of sports has trained instructor to guide the students.
“University authority is also thinking to make physical education department. As a result, the student will able to learn and study on physical education”, added Faysal.

Jahangirnagar University

The university has plagued its sports facilities crisis over lack of playground, essential sports instruments and water for swimming pool. Only one central playground is usable for 14000 students while all sorts of sports held and another two are in dessert condition. Lack of securities exercises instruments has been losing day by day. Water less swimming pool remains unusable for a long-period while a dressing room is needed.
Marking the positive spheres of players, JU physical exercise department has hosted Inter-batch cricket tournament for male, football tournament, basketball, table tennis, badminton etc. Gymnasium office added, ahead of victory day, every year, they have arranged Chancellor Cup Inter-department hand ball for female, Vice-Chancellor Inter Hall Cup Football tournament for male.
Director of Physical Exercise department, Sifatullah Khan said, “We badly in need of a pavilion for central playground while numbers of players from different universities have come here. But we have not given proper service over lack of good sanitation or good accommodation.”

Chittagong University

The university is giving much importance in the fields of games and sports. “The university is providing different sports facilities. The authority is planning to develop the university gymnasium. Hopefully, within this year we will able to provide our students a standard gymnasium with better equipments”, said Habibur Rahman Jalal, deputy director of Physical Education department.
According to Jalal, the Physical Education department is organizing several coaching programmes for all selected team of different games like cricket, handball, volleyball, tennis, basketball, football, hockey, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, swimming, chess, carrom etc.  Department also issues the certificate to qualified athlete and players. University authority provides some Stipend and Free-studentship for selected students as well.
The university authority provides a facility name “Players Quota” for the 30 talented students with some special quality to admit in different subjects in all faculties. There are playgrounds in most of the residential halls and other playgrounds for respective games as well.
According to CU correspondent, the university has a prestigious recent history in swimming. The university has won six inter-university swimming competitions in a row from 2009 to 2015. But the university does not have a swimming pool. The university students do swimming on a pond called ‘Gol Pukur’. So university required a swimming pool as early as possible to more enhance the swimming quality of the students.

Rajshahi University

According to Chowdhuri Muniruzzaman, director of the Education for Physical Exercise department of RU, the university has available facilities for physical exercise and games. RU has a stadium which is the largest stadium among the public universities in Bangladesh and the largest gallery for the spectators. Even there is enough space for the games can be held 3 more at a time into the stadium.
A large gymnasium with digital facilities has at the university. Among them dumbbell, barbell, swim bell, sit-up, push-up and chin-up. Without it, following the needs of the students, three multi gyms (10 and 7 stations) have been brought costing a few lakh taka where 7 of more gymnastics can be exercise at a time. In the gymnasium, there are available facilities for indoor games like carrom, basketball, taykoyando, table tennis, chess and others.
A swimming pool is availed for the athletics where they practiced there. Even changing the water of the pool, a digital system is under processing where water supplying and removing system will be implemented automatically at the same time. An air conditioned room for the guest will be built at one side of pool’s gallery, said Chowdhuri Muniruzzaman, director of the Education for Physical Exercise department of RU.
Chowdhuri Muniruzzaman said, “We have good facilities for physical exercise and games for the students. We launched taykoyando training programme which is still continuing. Our students brought the fame from national and international fields as they have been made complete contestants for competition. We always try continuing the level.”

North South University
According to the professor Dr Emdadul Haq, director of Students Affairs, the university motivates and facilitates students both in indoor and outdoor sports. The university has a dedicated playground for cricket, football and badminton. For indoor games including table tennis, chess, basketball, there are different spaces. Also, there is another space for gymnasium, though that is still under construction.
“Our university encourages students, to get involve in sports. To develop the quality and manage the sports activities, university formed a club called Athletics Club. Over the years this club has gone beyond the horizons of its own space by capturing most of the champion prizes in the inter-university tournaments in recent years. Members of the club have been showing superb performance in conducting sports activities both within and beyond the campus”, said Emdad.

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh

ULAB is basically emphasizing on six several types of sports so far. Those are cricket, football, table tennis, chess, carrom and badminton. To manage the sports facilities and organise different sports events, there is two separate sports clubs at the university. One is Field Sports Club, where includes cricket and football, and table tennis, chess, carrom and badminton are under Indoor Games Club.
According to Ahmed Saad Ishtiaque, Advisor of ULAB Indoor Games Club, ULAB has provided a cricket field including international standard pitch. Instruments and kits are gradually upgraded each and every year. On the other hand, the football team is getting the facilities of playground as well.
“ULAB has gained success with its cricket team among the private universities of Bangladesh the Indoor Games Club is also keeping itself busy by arranging annual tournaments in table tennis, chess, carrom and badminton”, said Ishtiaque.
“The university has provided game rooms within its limited campus space to encourage our students. The university also provides professional training to our students by providing the students with professional coaches. The authorities have also provided us with a field in our upcoming permanent campus where we are privileged to have our very own cricket ground and badminton courts”, he added.

Independent University, Bangladesh

According to Kazi Faruque Ahmed, deputy director of Division of Students Affairs (DOSA), the university has eight different types of sports facilities. Those sports include cricket, football, table tennis, badminton, billiard, basketball, carrom and chess. Different sports have different coaches to provide quality guidance on that particular type of sport. The university authority is providing playground for cricket, football and badminton, where also students are getting different space for indoor games as well. The university has 4000 sq ft gymnasium, where approximately 100 students are doing gym every day.
“The university authority is providing different sports facilities to the students for their development of physical fitness as well as emotional health. Every year our university is participating and organizing different sports events including intra and inter universities. And our students are also achieving success for them and for our university as well.”
