The construction work on the bridge across the river Chitra has remained suspended for about three months for fresh load tests and redesigning of viaduct, sources said.
The sources said construction of the140-metre long and eight-metre width bridge, which will connect Narail headquarters with Lohagara-Kalna–Mawa, started in May, 2015 and is scheduled to complete in October, 2016. They said the bridge, designed to sustain 250 tonnes of load, underwent load test thrice despite completion of 33 percent of construction work. Managing director of construction firm MBEL & UDC Joint Venture Engineer Kalam Hossain said the third and last load test conducted on January 18 this year was successful as usual like the previous ones. “But, we are yet to get permission to work on the main bridge portion,” he said. Hossain has also explained the hazards he had experienced with regards to the design of the viaduct portion.
He said a proposal of altering the design of viaduct at the Narail town end has been sent to the head office of LGED considering the ground condition. On the basis of the proposal, the project director has inspected the spot and agreed to the proposal and said a new and corrected design will be prepared soon, he said adding, “We have not yet received any new design.”
Executive Engineer of Narail LGED Mohammad Motaleb Biswas said: “Anticipating a failure to finish the work in time the construction firm has resorted to a blame game.
The work order of main bridge portion has already been given. There is no barrier to starting work on the main bridge portion now.”
However, Superintendent Engineer (design) of LGED Head Office Alinur Rahman said the design work of Narail town end of the viaduct is under process. It will be completed soon.
