Finance Minister AMA Muhtih yesterday agreed with a report by Transparency International (TI) that ranks Bangladesh the 13th most corrupt country in the world, and admitted that there has been no progress in the country to check corruption.
“I think the corruption scenario did not improve at all. I think there has been no progress made in terms of tackling corruption,” the minister said while talking to reporters at the secretariat.
He also emphasised on digitalisation to reduce graft in the country.
“We have several initiatives to reduce corruption and digitalisation process is on in this regard,” he said.
Commenting on a remark by the TI on the absence of positive change in financial sector, the minister said, “They could be right.”
Asked for comments on financial scams, including that of Hallmark, the finance minister said steps have been taken regarding these issues.
Even a managing director of a bank has also been arrested as part of these steps, he added.
The TI, in a report revealed yesterday, ranked Bangladesh 13th among the most corrupt countries in the world.
Bangladesh scored 25 points to end at 13th among 168 countries in the ranking. Last year, Bangladesh ranked 14th scoring the same points among 175 countries.
