Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday said that a special project will be undertaken to prevent pollution of rivers, including Buriganga, Shitlakhya, Balu and Turag.
“Before taking up the project, we will conduct a study of the city’s four rivers. The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will implement the project,” Shajahan told reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting held at the Secretariat.
Among others, LGRD Minister Khandaker Mosharrof Hossain; Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain; Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud; Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju; Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif; Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Anisul Huq; and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon attended the meeting.
Shajahan said that the Industries Ministry will take initiative in relocating tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar Tannery Estate in the stipulated time. “If the tanneries are not shifted within the stipulated period as per the Industries Ministry’s directives, their factories will be shut down,” he said.
Shajahan said that there will be no fine now against those factories having effluent treatment plants (ETP) that are not operational. “The factories will be shut down if ETPs are found operational,” he added.
