Ace golfer Siddikur Rahman will lead the local charge when the 2nd Bashundhara Bangladesh Open will be held at Kurmitola Golf Club course in the capital from February 10 to 13.
The event will be an Asian Tour Professional Tournament and it is expected that about 132 pro-golfer drawn from 25-30 countries would take part in the 72-hole four-day tournament. Hosts Bangladesh will field 25 professional and five amateur golfers other than Siddik who will play directly as a ranking player of Asian Tour.
Like previous time, Bashundhara Group will sponsor the tournament at a cost of $31.50 which included 30 lakh dollars for prize money. The champion will earn 18 per cent of the total prize money and the remaining amount will be distributed among the top 50 players.
Brig Gen Selim Akhtar, media committee chairman and a member of tournament organizing committee, stated this at a press conference at Kurmitola Golf Club (KGC) yesterday. Brig Gen (retd) Obaidul Haque, CEO of the club, JGC tournament committee chairman Abidur Reza Khan, KGC general manager (golf operation) Lt Col (retd) Md Abdul Bari, media committee member Major Khondokar Nurul Afsar and media committee coordinator Md Ataullah were also present.
Apart from Siddik there would be 5-6 more players of Bangladesh who are capable to fight for the top position. “Definitely Siddik would be our main hopes besides Jamal, Milon, Liton and Sajib are also the key contenders,” said Akhtar.
“I think Siddik is in good form and he is now away from the country to participate in the Singapore Open from today and way back home he would also take part in the Myanmar Open before starting his Bangladesh campaign.”
He said it is very expensive and tough to play in the Asian Tour. First of all the player will have to cross the qualifying hurdle before making him eligible for the Asian Tour. “Bangladesh is lucky to field 30 players directly as the host country and I think the local players would avail the home condition and ground advantage.”
“I think by organising the Asian Tour event, the game golf would gain popularity all over the country.” He urged all leading corporate houses of the country should come forward to patronise the game. He said ahead of the main tournament there will be a ProAm tournament on February 9.
