13 shops gutted in Gazipur fire
At least 13 shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at a market in Konabari industrial area of the city in Gazipur early yesterday. The fire originated at about 3am and soon engulfed other adjacent shops, said Md Hasibur Rahman station officer of Joydevpur fire service. Being informed, eight firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame after two hours of hectic efforts with the help of locals, he added.
The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately. The extent of loss caused by the fire is yet to be estimated.
Jamaat leader held in Sylhet
Police arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami from Sobhanighat area of Sylhet city on Tuesday in connection with several cases and on subversion charges.
The arrestee was identified as Yasin Khan, 35, a leader of the Sylhet city unit Jamaat and law affairs secretary of Mohanagar Shramik Kallyan Federation, son of Jafar Ali Khan, a resident of Pailgaon village in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district. Police said on secret information a team of police led by officer-in-charge of Janagnnathpur police station Md Mursalin and SI Mizanur Rahman conducted a drive in the area and arrested him.
The OC said Yasin was wanted in 25 cases, including for murder, police assault, and planning for subversive activities. He had remained in hiding for a long time, the OC added.
Quake resistant building in Savar
Construction work of an earthquake resistant 16 storied shopping complex cum commercial building with all modern facilities has been started in Savar.
Olympia Holding Ltd will construct the jolt resistant building named “Olympia Plaza” on 46 katha of land for the first time at Polashbari in Savar, a press release said yesterday.
Local Member of Parliament Dr Md Enamur Rahman inaugurated the construction work formally at a ceremony here recently. Dr Rahman expressed his hope that Bangladesh will become role model of modern construction in the world one day.
Olympia Holdings Ltd Chairman M Jamil Uddin and Managing Director M Shakil Uddin also spoke on the occasion, among others.
