The sub-regional organisation of four Asian nations under the banner of (BCIM) The Bangladesh–China–India–Myanmar Forum for Regional Cooperation is aimed at greater integration of trade and investment between the four countries.
Three among the four BCIM member countries have been reported to have finalised their respective country papers. Additionally, Bangladesh and China have shared their papers with each other.
Not one-to-one but only collective joint efforts of all the four countries can play a more prominent and a constructive role in ensuring the greater integration envisioned through the BCIM. Given its potentials, the economic advantages of the BCIM trade corridor are considerable, and most notable among them are: access to numerous markets in Southeast Asia, improvement of transportation infrastructure and creation of industrial zones.
However, we expect both the countries to evaluate each other’s country papers aimed to boost the existing bilateral ties and positively impact Bangladesh’s integration into China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. The BCIM developments have surprisingly coincided with the eve of our 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Dhaka and Beijing.
By developing connectivity with China, India, and Myanmar by roads, rail and other ways, Bangladesh can expectedly transform itself into a part of an industrial nexus and commercial hub linking up South and Southeast Asia. Moreover, The BCIM initiative would also open up new avenues of cross border energy trading for Bangladesh.
The BCIM initiative is designed to be materials through a sequential process and its impact would take time to bear fruition. However, the politicians, businesses, and other stakeholders need to have a clear picture regarding the challenges and benefits of better economic co-operation in the region. In the long term scenario, each country should aim for comprehensive and sustainable development aimed at capitalizing on the gift of geographical proximity. Connectivity would spur faster economic growth in the region while promising stronger co-operation between South and Southeast Asia.
Bangladesh positively stands to avail manifold opportunities through leveraging the connectivity options. The BCIM dream can only become up-and-coming if there is sincere collaboration on strategies, policies, plans and measures for co-operation thus bringing about common development and mutual benefits for all the countries. Furthermore, Bangladesh will also have to brace itself for tapping a chunk of the tourism markets of India, China, and Myanmar which would not only generate revenue from tourism but also create jobs.
BCIM may beam with potentials but it is joint continuous effort which is the key to unlock it.
