Section 144 imposed in Nandail

Local administration imposed yesterday section 144 at Merenga Bazar in Nandail upazila after two factions of Awami League (AL) called rallies at the same venue, same time. The factions, one led by Anwarul Abedin Khan Tuhin, MP and another loyal to Major Gen (retd) Abdus Salam, ex-AL lawmaker, also president of Nandail upazila unit AL, called separate rallies in Merenga Bazar area at the same time, said police. In anticipation of violence the Nandail upazila administration imposed section 144, a law that bars gathering of people, from 3.00 pm till 10am today (Sunday), said Mohammad Shahnoor Alam, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Nandail. Hearing the news on ban on rallies both the factions blocked Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road at upazila headquarters and Nandail Bazar area at around 3.00pm yesterday, disrupting road communication for over three hours.
