The BNP joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, has said that the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was a conspiracy by the government to establish one-party rule and provide the Prime Minister with "powers of a monarch".
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city yesterday (Thursday), he accused the former Chief Justice, ABM Khairul Haque, of helping the Awami League-led government move towards one-party rule through the 15th Amendment.
His comments came two days after Chief Justice SK Sinha’s remarks that writing verdicts after retirement was illegal and unconstitutional.
Rizvi further said Haque went against the Constitution by writing a verdict after his retirement to bestow unbridled powers on the Prime Minister.
He claimed that the former CJ wrote and signed the controversial verdict on scrapping the caretaker government provision because of greed.
“He (Haque) took Tk. 100,000 from the Prime Minister for medical treatment and was made chairman of the Law Commission. He was actually demoted from the coveted position to be made the chairman,” he alleged.
