The police yesterday arrested six people, including a police constable, on charges of demanding ransom from an expatriate at Khandar in Bogra town. They had sought the money in exchange for his release.
Amirul Islam, OC, DB, said they rescued the expatriate and arrested the six, including a DB constable.
The arrested persons are Asraful Alam, 34, of village Malgram, Sakawat Hossain Polash, 41, Nodi Khatun, 25, of Gabtoli, Sewly Beum, 28, of Sariakandi, Ratna Khatun, 19, Sariakandi and DB constable Ruhul Amin, 35.
Police, quoting Singapore expatriate Anwar Hossain, said the arrestees summoned him to the Khandar area by a fake love call on the phone. When he reached the house they detained him and demanded a ransom of Tk. 1,00,000. When he refused to pay the money, his captors beat him up and forced him to call up relatives for the ransom amount.
“The victim succeeded in sending an SMS to a police officer to rescue him from the kidnappers. A DB team rushed to the spot, rescued him and arrested the six culprits,” the OC said.
A complaint has been lodged at the Bogra Sadar Police Station. According to the Bogra police superintendent, Md Assaduzzaman, the constable has been closed in the police lines and an investigation committee formed to look into the allegation against him.
