Police yesterday said that they did not find any connection of the 26 Bangladeshi workers who had been sent to Bangladesh from Singapore on the allegation of their connection with militancy, with Islamic States (IS) or Al-Qaeda organisations.
Police, however, said 14 out of 26 people are the followers of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team.
Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said this at a press conference at DMP media centre yesterday.
“We did not find any links of these 26 Bangladeshis with IS or Al-Qaeda. But Detective Branch of Police after interrogation of them have found that 14 out of 26 are the followers of the chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team Jasimuddin Rahmania,” he said.
He said the Singapore government had sent these people to Bangladesh for their alleged links with militancy.
Quoting the report of Singapore, the joint commissioner said ‘the militants’ had plan to attack in Bangladesh.
Replying to a query, he said, they did not find any information regarding specific attack in Bangladesh.
“Those who had been sent back were labourers. They used to listen to religious sermon at a mosque in Singapore,” he added.
He further said that the police have found soft copies of the books written by Jasimuddin Rahmania in the mobile sets of some of the arrestees. Police lodges cases against 14 persons on December 21 under anti-terrorism act while remaining 12 have been releases but they are under police watch.
Cases have been filed against – Jafar Iqbal, Golam Zilani, Saiful Islam, Nurul Amin, Mahmudul Hasan, Aminur, Abdul Alim, Shah Alam, Akram Hossain, Alam Mahabub, Abdul Ali, Parvez Dollar, Md Jasim and Ashraful.
