Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman yesterday urged the plastic product manufacturers to take advantage of the central bank’s green finance facilities to establish recycling systems in plastic industries, reports UNB.
Addressing a seminar on “Plastic Waste Management and Way Forward” at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital, he said Bangladesh Bank has launched a refinancing to promote environmentally sustainable projects in industries.
“We have created Taka 2 billion refinance scheme for 50 green products of which 4 relate to solid waste management. I would highly encourage you to exploit this opportunity,” he told the audience who were mainly from the plastic industry sector.
Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufactures & Exporters Association (BPGMEA) organised the seminar while representatives from Asia Plastic Forum (APF) also present at the seminar organised on the occasion of ongoing 4-day plastic products expo at the BICC.
The governor said that that plastic has become an indispensable part of our economy as it is widely used in household appliances and other sectors like construction, telecommunication, packaging and many industries. Around 5,000 units in the en generate employment for more than a million people. “But non-biodegradable nature of plastic gives rise to great environmental concern”.
Quoting a United Nations Enquiry Programme (UNEP) report, he said use of plastic materials growing at 5 per cent per annum over the past 20 years. In developing countries, it is higher.
But lack of efficient waste management system poses serious threats to environment and human health when plastic wastes are not disposed of properly, he observed.
“We need to ensure 100 per cent recycling of plastic wastes in the most innovative and cost effective ways. This will not only help protect environment but also will create massive employment in the recycling industry,” said the governor.
Atiur urged the concerned sectors to adopt an integrated approach to improve the plastic waste management system with combination of different methods.
