Green activists in the capital yesterday demanded immediate implementation of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation (Amendment) Act for bringing an end to pollution by tanneries in the capital’s Hazaribagh area, reports UNB.
They came up with the demand during a public hearing organised by the Department of Environment (DoE) at its Agargaon Bhaban in the capital.
Poribesh Bachao Andalon (Poba), a voluntary organisation, raised an allegation during the hearing that the Hazaribagh’s tanneries have been polluting the Buriganga River for the last 65 years.
Due to unabated disposal of waste, the water of the Buriganga River has got extremely polluted, which does not support any organism during dry season, the environmental activists said.
If the tanneries are not relocated, pollution in the Buriganga River as well as Dhaka city will worsen further, causing various environmental hazards, they added.
Calling upon the DoE to formulate a framework to control polythene, Poba also alleged that the use of banned polythene bags is on the rise here.
Chaired by DoE deputy director general KSI Hashmi, the public hearing was participated, among others, by Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan, its assistant secretary Abul Hashnat and coordinator Atique Morshed.
