Are e-groceries the solution to formalin free food?

SAQIB SHADMAN BASHAR

When one types--the first few alphabets of the word ‘formalin’ into the Google search bar the phrase ‘Formalin in food Bangladesh’ shows up with suggestions. Adding formalin to fruits, vegetables and meat is now one of the common practices in Bangladesh.
Research shows that, about 70-90 per cent of product available for sale is contaminated with formalin. And news about formalin additions to food is abundant. So abundant, that even the 10th page of Google’s search results (under the news category) contains relevant information. In an article published by bdnews24.com, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said that he stopped buying fruits from markets because of the ubiquitous presence of formalin.
So, it’s official. People can no longer look forward to a healthy, safe-to-eat meal without worrying about formalin poisoning. In response to all of this, the government passed the ‘Formalin Control Act-2015′ in order to put a tight leash on the addition of formalin to food products. Under the act, violators and offenders can face very harsh sentences.
However, how well the act will be implemented and the long term consequences of the situations remain dubious. But as people are raising their voices to formalin free produce, some vendors out there are providing exactly what people want when it comes to fresh food.
Online vendors are coming up with solutions people should perhaps check out. As with shopping in markets, people ordering groceries online are also concerned about eating safe. The difference between retail-wholesale options and online marketplaces is that online marketplaces have a chance to sell certified fresh and safe products approved by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
Such vendors have worked hard to build a network of farmers and producers to ensure that they grow food that is up to international standards. Sure, online retailers may perhaps be pushing it when it comes to marketing themselves.
But at least people are ensured about the safety and freshness of the produce they receive.
But there’s more, with vendors such as Direct Fresh, people do not need to go through the hassle of going to a market, select the freshest thing possible and then stand in long queues to pay. Now, all that’s required is a simple log in, a purchase order and the groceries are simply delivered to customers’ doorsteps.
