ICC Under-19 World Cup is knocking at the door as the curtain of the biennial 16-nation tournament will be raised on January 27 following the scheduled ICC warm-up matches.
The bulk of the overseas teams have already arrived in Dhaka to play the 11th edition. Along with Afghanistan, Scotland, Canada, Sri Lankan and neighbour India, who arrived Wednesday with a power-packed batting line-up featuring high among the top contenders to bag the trophy.
India led by Mohammad Kaif clinched their maiden trophy in 20000. Thereafter, they won it by Virat Kohli and Unmukt Chand’s captaincy in 2008 and 2012.
In their first briefing, all the team’s captains briefed media about their respective team’s strength, target and expectation. Indian skipper Ishan Kishan said that he wants to keep his name beside Kaif, Virat Kohli and Unmukt Chand winning the 2016 trophy from Bangladesh.
“Previous tournaments they’re captains and everyone knows of it. It’s selectors who chose me this time. They showed trust on me. But it’s not very good because the performance on the given day depends on. We’re looking on it how it is going on,” said Ishan Kishan.
“In 2008, India won the World Cup. Later in 2012, we won the trophy and Unmukt Chand was captain. We came in 2016 after four-year gap. So, people are expecting that from me,” Kishan told reporters at their first formal briefing at Hotel Le Meridien Dhaka Limited in the capital yesterday.
About team’s strength, Indian skipper said, “Strength of my team is that almost every batsman can bowl. We’ve a pace bowling attack that’s good. We’ve a good fielding unit. Our batting goes till No 8, which is a plus point. It’ll help us in the matches.
Batsman-turn-wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, who hails from World Cup-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s home state of Jharkhand, tipped Dhoni as inspirational.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka has been playing since 1988 but they are yet to win the trophy. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka, who played just one first-class match coupled with school cricket before coming to World Cup, said that his responsibility is to fetch the title for his country.
“All teams will have target to win the World Cup. I’ll have the responsibility to bring the trophy home. If I can, I’ll be for the first time, and it’ll be a big thing,” Asalanka said in his reaction.
However, Afghanistan skipper Ihsanullah Janat echoed the same thing. Through his interpreter he said, “We beat Pakistan in their home so we hope we can beat them and top our group. We dream of winning the trophy, Insha Allah.”
Canadian captain Abraash Khan however said that they have set their goal in the World Cup to play in the second round.
Scotland skipper Neil Flack said that they have come here to reckon with as cricketing force by causing upset.
“We want to show that we’e a force to be reckoned with. We want to show that we can cause a few upsets,” said Flack.
